Abstract

Coal tar is usually used for the production of cheap carbonaceous materials such as binder pitches and pitch cokes. Recently many researches have been performed on producing high-quality carbon materials, such as carbon fibers and high density and high strength carbon materials, from coal tar.<BR>In order to produce such high-quality carbon materials from coal tar at high yields, we have studied the polymerization behavior of coal tar using nitric acid as a polymerization catalyst. Experimental results showed that nitric acid can effectively promote the coal tar polymerization, leading to high yields of carbon materials.
