Abstract

Eugene Garfield was an outstanding leader of the information revolution in the second half of the 20th century. He introduced citation indexing as a method for organizing scholarly literature by exploiting the links that authors made in their own works (cited references) to associate one publication with another. Not only did this offer more precise information retrieval, it also permitted studies of the structure and dynamics of the scientific literature, opened a way to mapping science, and introduced analysis of the research impact of nations, institutions, journals, and authors. He was a generous benefactor of information science, of education in science and the arts, and of social welfare organizations to help the homeless. He achieved a complete life with accomplishment in intellectual, business, social, and personal spheres. (127 words)
