Abstract

Fluidization deformation due to liquefaction layers composed of pyroclastic materials is observed at Izu-misaki on Miyake-jima, Japan. We have studied stratigraphy of the vicinity of liquefied layers, the flow deformation structures and their characteristics, the age of liquefaction. The major conclusions are as follows: The liquefied Hatchodaira Formation is considerably deformed with forming a lot of mounds. Most of the mounds were formed by sand boils. The sketched profiles and distribution of mounds' structure lead to the possibility of the flow deformation due to liquefaction. The deformation age of the Hatchodaira Formation is inferred 2,700-2,500 y.B.P. by stratigraphy and ^<14>C radiometric ages. These ages agree with the formation age of the Hatchodaira caldera. The liquefaction and flow deformation are believed relate to the Hatchodaira caldera formation.
