Description

To determine whether a strabismus in the amblyopia due to anisohypermetropia is caused by the organic amblyopia, fusional disorder, or both, we reviewed the records of 27 children (age 4 to 10 years) with anisohypermetropia which were defined as a difference of 2 diopter (D) or greater between the refraction of the two eyes. And all the patients had the amblyopic eye having higher degree of hypermetropia with or whithout astigmatism.
In the results, 20 children had no strabismus with the unilateral pure amblyopia due to anisohypermetropia, which were mainly caused by anatomical developmental anomaly of the shortend posterior segment of ocular axis only in the amblyopic eye. Five children had esotropia and 2 children had intermittent exotropia.
We conclude that the amblyopia due to anisohypermetropia has no strabismus in principle, and that if the patients have strabismus it will be required to examine whether the strabismus is caused by strabismic amblyopia and/or anisometropic amblyopia in indivisual cases.
