Description

[Purpose] To compare the measurement accuracy between two optical biometers, and to evaluate the influential factors for measurement error.

[Subjects and Methods] Subjects were 29 eyes of 29 healthy volunteers (12 men,17 women) with corrected visual acuity of > 1.0. Mean age was 27.62 ± 5.15 years. Using optical biometers OA-2000 and OA-1000 (Tomey), each device measured the axial length 5 times consecutively on the same day with the phakic mode. Repeatability was assessed and coefficient of variance (CV) was calculated to evaluate the stability of the measurement for each device.

[Results] The subjects' mean spherical equivalent error, intraocular pressure, and corneal thickness were -4.58 ± 2.91 D, 13.31 ± 2.26 mmHg, and 527.31 ± 24.92 μm, respectively. The respective mean axial lengths by the OA-2000 and OA-1000 were 25.11 ± 1.22 mm and 25.05 ± 1.22 mm. The five measurements of the axial length by each device did not significantly differ (P = 0.95 for the OA-2000 and P = 0.92 for the OA-1000, ANOVA) indicating high repeatability. The mean CV values were 0.0002 ± 0.0003 for the OA-2000 and 0.0005 ± 0.0006 for the OA-1000. The CV for the OA-2000 was significantly higher than that for the OA-1000 (P < 0.01, Wilcoxon signed-rank test). No influential factors (age, spherical equivalent error, intraocular pressure, corneal thickness) for measurement error were found by multiple regression analysis.

[Conclusion] While no significant difference in repeatability was observed between the OA-2000 and OA-1000, the OA-2000 showed a greater stability of measurement than the OA-1000. In addition, no influential factors for axial length measurement were found.
