When we observe two different images dichoptically, our conscious percept alternates between these two images resulting in “binocular rivalry”. Despite a long history of scientific researches, the neural mechanism of this phenomenon is not clarified yet. On the contrary, the conventional research paradigm of this field is being altered by the recent results from new observation technology such as functional MRI. During the last decade binocular rivalry has been attracting wide interests of neuroscientists because it can provide useful experimental paradigms for neural correlates of conscious perception. We can regard binocular rivalry as a today's hot topic as well as a century-long scientific issue.<br>In this lecture, I will review the research history of binocular rivalry, and explain the latest situation. I will also introduce our original researches which found that binocular rivalry is one branch of a wider category “multiple visual perception” and that it may share common neural mechanisms with the other branches such as ambiguous figure perception.
