Description

Objective: To provide a historical precis of static ocular counterrolling.
Methods: Literature review
Results: In the 18th century (1786), Hunter described dynamic ocular couterrolling in a book, called: "Observation on certain parts of the animal economy" . Until Nagal observed the existence of static ocular counterrolling in 1871 through his own astigmatism, which acts as a driving force in the Bielschowsky head tilt test, dynamic ocular counterrolling was not differentiated from static counterrolling. Halm then utilized static counterrolling to diagnose superior oblique palsy by observing vertical deviation on ipsi- and contralateral head tilt. In 1900, Hoffmann and Bielschowsky developed and utilized the phenomenon of static ocular counterrollung as a valuable tool to diagnose superior oblique muscle palsy, as well as other cyclo-vertical strabismus disorders.
Conclusion: The Bielschowsky head tilt test followed a long history leading up to its clinical use.
