説明

Low vision clients who have an acuity level below 2/200 commonly use Braille. However, using near vision optical aids that have a high magnifying power, such as loupes and CCTV, enable them to read and write. The Nippon Lighthouse Welfare Center for the Blind treated 74 patients whose visual acuity was 2/200 for light perception, hand motion and being able to count fingers. We successfully treated 18 of these patients. As a result of our treatment, the correlation between visual acuity and the magnification by near vision optical aids is as follows: for the 2/200 case; 2 people used loupes magnified to six times, 1 person to seven times, 1 person to ten times, 5 people to fifteen times and 2 people used the CCTV. For the counting fingers cases; 2 people used the loupes magnified to fifteen times and 2 people used CCTV. For the hand motion cases; 1 person used loupes magnified to six times, 1 person to seven times, 1 person to fifteen times and 2 people used CCTV. Visually impaired people who had had enough previous experience of reading and writing when they had full use of their eyesight were motivated to try to use the near vision optical aids. On the other hand, visually impaired people who did not have the desire to read and was congenitally impaired did not have enough knowledge of Chinese characters to be motivated to use the optical aids.
