Description

The present state and changes regarding the visual field examinations performed in our department were investigated. The number of eyes that received a visual field examination, the age distribution, the purpose of the examination, and the type of visual field tests performed were compared among the years of 1988, 1998, and 2008.
1) The numbers of eyes and patients that received a visual field examination and the percentage to the total number of patients treated in the department were 2350 eyes of 1233 patients (2%) in 1988, 5101 eyes of 2669 patients (4%) in 1998, and 7275 eyes of 3762 patients (6%) in 2008.
2) Regarding the distribution of patients' ages, 60s in 1988 (24%) and 1998 (26%) and 70s in 2008 (25%) were the leading age groups.
3) More than 50% of the patients that required a visual field examination had glaucoma followed by central nervous system (CNS) disease and retinal diseases.
4) Among the eyes that received a visual field examination, 48% in 1988, 52% in 1998, and 73% in 2008 were examined by static quantitative perimetry. In 2008, 90% of the eyes with glaucoma were examined by static quantitative perimetry and 73% of the eyes with CNS were examined by kinetic quantitative perimetry.
In recent years, the demand for visual field examinations has been increasing especially in elderly patients. Patients' diseases and their general physical conditions should also be considered in order to perform an effective visual field examination.
