Abstract

[Purpose] To evaluate the surgical outcomes of sensory strabismus.

[Materials and Methods] A total of 35 consecutive patients (age range, 12-86 years) who had undergone strabismus surgery for sensory strabismus were retrospectively studied.

[Results] Probable causes of vision loss were congenital in 13 cases and acquired in 20 cases. Visual acuity of the worst eye varied between 0.2 and no light perception. Initial diagnoses were exotropia (n=32) and esotropia (n=3). In all patients, surgery was performed only on the affected eye. Initial types of operative procedures were muscle recession and muscle resection (n=23), and muscle recession only (n=12). The mean preoperative deviation was 46.1 ± 16.8 prism diopters (PD) in the exotropia group and 63.3 ± 29.0 PD in the esotropia group. The mean postoperative deviation improved to 14.9 ± 12.1 PD in the exotropia group and 22.3 ± 16.0 PD in the esotropia group. All patients achieved successful postoperative results by their final visit.

[Conclusion] The present results suggest that surgery for sensory strabismus achieves a good cosmetic appearance.
