Visual acuity of eyes with ametropic and anisometropic amblyopia under binocular circularly polarized conditions

<p>[Purpose] Using circularly polarized light, we compared the monocular visual acuity and visual acuity under binocular conditions of uniocular amblyopic patients.</p><p>[Methods] We selected 12 patients who had been diagnosed with ametropic or anisometropic amblyopia at their first visit and showed monocular best-corrected decimal visual acuity of the amblyopic eye ≥1.0 by treatment with refractive glasses. We selected 6 healthy subjects without amblyopia as the comparison group. Using a PC-50SB panel chart connected to Compu Vision CV-5000 (Topcon Corporation), we measured and compared best-corrected monocular visual acuity and visual acuity under binocular conditions with a circularly polarizing filter.</p><p>[Results] Monocular visual acuity under circularly polarized light was decreased compared with normal monocular visual acuity in 7 of 12 amblyopic eyes in uniocular amblyopic patients, 2 of 12 normal eyes of uniocular amblyopic patients, and 4 of 12 eyes in healthy subjects. However, visual acuity under binocular conditions with circularly polarized light decreased more than monocular visual acuity under circularly polarized light in 8 of 12 amblyopic eyes of uniocular amblyopic patients, 2 of 12 normal eyes, and 0 eyes in healthy subjects.</p><p>[Conclusion] As brightness decreased under circularly polarized light, a decrease in visual acuity was observed both in patients with uniocular amblyopic patients and in healthy subjects. However, healthy subjects showed no difference between monocular visual acuity and visual acuity under binocular conditions with circularly polarizing filter, whereas uniocular amblyopic patients showed a significant difference (p<0.05). Measuring monocular visual acuity under binocular conditions is important in determining the treatment of amblyopic eyes.</p>
