Description
[Purpose] To evaluate the topographical corneal changes after corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL) for keratoconus.
[Subjects and Methods] Eleven eyes of 9 patients (age, 15 to 36 years; mean ± SD, 21.9 ± 6.5 years) with progressive keratoconus were enrolled in the study. All the subjects received CXL surgeries at Nagoya Eye Clinic and at least one year had passed after surgery. Anterior corneal topography was analyzed using TMS-4 Advance (TOMEY). Average keratometory readings, simulated keratometric cylinder, surface asymmetry index (SAI), surface regularity index (SRI), high order irregular astigmatism, and asymmetric component by fourier analysis were obtained. The anterior and posterior best fit sphere (BFS) values were measured by slit-scanning corneal topography (Orbscan IIz, Bausch & Lomb) before and after surgery. Using these parameters, the topographical corneal changes before and one year after CXL were evaluated. Statistical analysis was conducted by paired t-test, and a p-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
[Results] Significant decreases were seen in the average keratometory readings (P = 0.005) and high order irregular astigmatism (P = 0.028) after CXL. In addition, the anterior BFS significantly became flat after CXL (P = 0.003).
[Conclusion] The current study suggested that CXL does not only stop the progression of keratoconus but also decreases the average keratometric power and high order irregular astigmatism.
