Description
[Purpose] We investigated the outcomes of Laser in situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) ten years after surgery in patients with low or medium myopia(-6 D or less)and patients with high myopia (-6 D or more).
[Subjects and Methods] Subjects were 62 eyes of 32 patients (19 males and 13 females; average age, 33.7 ± 6.8 years) who underwent LASIK at our clinic between July 1999 and September 2003. The reason for visiting the clinic ten years after surgery was retrospectively investigated. The subjects were divided into the low/medium myopia group (24 eyes) with preoperative refraction less than -6D and the high myopia group (38 eyes) with preoperative refraction more than -6D. The uncorrected visual acuity (VA) and refractive errors measured preoperatively, at postoperative 6 months and 10 years were compared between both groups.
[Results] Of 32, 22 (68.8%) subjects visited the clinic because of decreased VA and 4 (12.5%) came for regular checkup. The average VA measured preoperatively, at postoperative 6 months and 10 years for the low/medium and high myopia groups were 0.07 and 0.03, 1.24 and 1.18, and 0.92 and 0.55, respectively. The respective percentages of patients who could achieve VA of 1.0 ten years after surgery for the low/medium and high myopia groups were 62.5% and 18.4% and a significant difference was observed (P = 0.0017). The average refractive errors measured preoperatively, at postoperative 6 months and 10 years for the low/medium and high myopia groups were -3.89 ± 1.47 D and -8.73 ± 1.70 D, +0.09 ± 0.54 D and -0.06 ± 0.33 D, and -0.30 ± 0.79 D and -1.22 ± 0.79 D, respectively. By comparing the subjective refraction levels at postoperative 6 months and 10 years, the low/medium and high myopia groups respectively had 8 eyes (33.3%) and 29 eyes (76.3%) that became more myopic for -0.50 D or more. The high myopia group significantly became more myopic (P = 0.0004).
[Conclusion] Both groups showed regression of myopia, especially the high myopia group. Therefore, long-term follow-up is necessary.
