Twenty seven diabetic patients, accompanied with ophthalmoplegia, who visited the Dept. of Ophthalmology of Saiseikai Central Hospital over the period between September 1980 and August, 1988 were retrospectively studied.<br>The age of onset of ophthalmoplegia ranged from 36 to 78 y. o. (Av, 65.1 y. o.) and 21 out of 27 were of the age more than 60 y. o. The abducens was involved in 14 cases, the oculomotor 10 cases and the trochlear 3 cases. The time between the onset and the recovery ranged 10 days and 19 months (Av, 5.7 months). Diabetic retinopathy, retinal arteriole sclerosis (Scheie's grade) and metabolic control were not related with onset and recovery of the ophthalmoplegia.<br>Fasting plasma glucose and HbA 1 around 6 months prior to the onset and at the onset were almost identical.<br>When examining the patient, it is important for optical technologists to borrow the clinical feature and to share the informations of the ophthalmoplegia as a manifestation of diabetic mononeuropathy with relatively good prognosis.
