An europium-chelating [2Fe-2S] cluster was used to assemble an optical molecular chemosensor highly selective for phosphate-containing anions. Phosphate, pyrophosphate, AMP, ADP, ATP, DNA and RNA were well distinguished by UV/Vis absorption or fluorescence studies.
