The equilibrium test for neurotic vertigo and the Y-G test were performed in patients with cranio-cervical injury with the following results:
(1) The incidence of emotional instability detected by the Y-G test was greater in patients with ataxia of Type A of the above-mentioned equilibrium test than in those with ataxia of Type B. This tendency was more evident in males than in females.
(2) Patients who showed ataxia of Type A tended to produce Types B and E of the Y-G test (profile-classification) without any sign of Type C. In contrast, patients who showed ataxia of Type B tended to produce Types D and A of the Y-G test without any sign of Type E.
From the results described in (1) and (2), the following conclusions were drawn:
(1) The above-mentioned results support our idea that the ataxia of Type A of the equilibrium test for neurotic vertigo is probably produced on the basis of the neural mechanism related to psycho-somatic diseases. This probably does not apply to the ataxia of Type B of the equilibrium test.
(2) The above-mentioned results probably give a clue to clarify how abnormality of personal character can relate to the production of vertigo, using a neurophysiological approach rather than those of psychology and psychiatry.
