In rabbits, the appearance of neck-torsion nystagmus varies in relation to the position of the four limbs. In order to obtain further evidence of the neural mechanism for this phenomenon, such was analyzed using the ENG, EMG's from the muscles of the neck and four limbs and the EEG's from the hippocampus and neocortex. The results obtained were as follows: (1) Rabbits were suspended in the air in a cloth with their four limbs not touching the ground (original posture). The EMG's from the deep neck muscles (particularly those of the side of the upper eye) and the arousal state in the EEG's in the original posture were activated when the hindlimbs were supported by a horizontal bar and then the head was twisted. Thus, the appearance of neck-torsion nystagmus increased. Conversely, the above mentioned EMG's and the arousal state in the EEG's decreased when the hindlimbs were pulled downward and then the head was twisted. Thus, the appearance of neck-torsion nystagmus decreased. (2) In the case of support and/or pull of the forelimbs, no significant alteration in the ENG, EMG's from the neck muscles and the arousal state in the EEG's was found when the neck was twisted. These findings indicate that in rabbits, the proprioceptors of the hindlimbs play a major role in enhancing and/or suppressing neck-torsion nystagmus, in close collaboration with the proprioceptors of the neck region.
