説明

Experiments were done to assess the role of plantar mechanoreceptors in control of bodily sway. The stimulations were given by use of boards with inlaid shotgun balls, one with a distance of 1cm between the balls, another with a distance of 1.5cm between and the last with 2cm distance between the balls.
The subjects were asked to stand straight, their bodily sways were analyzed on a gravigram, and figurative results were obtained. Factors such as the area of sway, the accumulated shift distance caused by the sways and the velocity of sway all tended to decrease, depending on the degree of stimulation.
This phenomenon was concluded to be an indication that plantar mechanoreceptors provide useful information which should aid in the control of body sway. In experiments on the discharge from the tibial nerve fibers we found that this discharge markedly increases when stimulation is given, as compared to no stimulation. Furthermore, M- and H- wave changes were negligible despite different degrees of stimulation. We concluded that increase in plantar mechanoreceptor input information participated in higher central nervous system control mechanisms rather than the spinal level control system, and was particularly effective with regard to reflexes such as footing adjustment when right/left sways occur. Thus, the anterior spinothalamic system in relation to spinocerebellar degeneration is most important.
