Description

This paper describes the modifications and improvements which have been done at the Caue Concentration Plant since it was started up by Cia. Vale do Rio Doce in 1972 at Itabira, MG, Brasil.
The original design proved to have a poor flexibility on achieving an iron content for the pellet feed greater than the 66.8% required during the first year of operation.
The modification were scheduled to be done at two steps. The first one have been completed in 1977 by changing the relative position of the classification and the magnetic separation stages. Besides this, the whole system for filtering was modified, using disc filters instead of the former horizontal plan filters. Thereafter, in order to increase the volumetric capacity at the fines' magnetic separators and to permit an increase on the quality of concentrates, the second step—mainly an increase on pumping capacity—was performed.
It shows also the experience recently conducted at the start up of a new enrichment plant for Pellet Feed using cationic flotation that made CVRD able to supply concentrates with SiO2 content ranging from 0.8% to 5.5% to our Pellet Plants.
Finally the improvements planned to be done, in order to concentrate by jigging the coarse fractions of sinter fines, are described.
