In order to obtain thin and wide tow continuously, a new spreading method was developed. Its mechanism, and the relationship between the process conditions and the spreading behavior were also investigated.<BR>The results are as follows :<BR>(1) When uniform air flow continuously operates on a tow sagged with a fixed size in transverse way, the tow can be continually and stably spreaded out.<BR>(2) When pressure difference between on the central part and on the side parts of the tow is generated by air flow, the force directing to both ends in width of the tow acts on fibers with in tow and results in spreading tow.<BR>(3) When the sag of the tow is at an optimum small displacement, the movement of every fiber is restricted to a certain extent. So the tow can be spreaded out uniformly.<BR>(4) The velocity of the tow has almost no effect on the spreading width.<BR>(5) When non-twist carbon tow 3K is spreaded, the tow can take a uniformaly dispersed configuration having about 11mm in width, under the conditions that the length of air flow exerted on the tow is 20mm and the tow sag is 4mm, the air velocity is 40m/s, and the tow velocity is 2m/min.
