In order to disclose the structure of the gel prepared from cellulose-cuprammonium solutions (CAS) and its formation mechanism, we determined the phase diagram of the cellulose-CAS system and investigated viscoelastic properties of the system and change of the cellulose-CAS complex during gelation.<BR>The results are as follows : 1) Cellulose-CAS system at 40°C takes three phases, cellulose solution, gel, and soliddepending on the composition of the system. 2) The cellulose-CAS system with specific compositions occursgelation with an increase of temperature due to the partial distraction of chelate of cellulose-cuprammoniumcomplex which leads to formation of intermolecular hydrogen bondings of cellulose molecules. 3) The gelationalso occurs by adding of water and sodium hydroxide solution to the system. 4) By the water, the gel with lowelasticity is obtained by the same mechanism as an elevation of the temperature, while the alkali solution givesthe gel with very high elasticity because of the formation so called Norman compound.
