It was shown from the microscopic observation of the Bioden RFA replices from etched surfaces of the polished shell that the shell structure of Patinopecten yessoensis (JAY) consists of three layers ; that is, outer layer, hypostracum and inner layer, and that hypostracum is composed of aragonite and the other two have the foliated structure of calcite. Extracts of the outer layers of one recent specimen and eight fossil ones of different ages, Middle Miocene to Upper Pleistocene, all belonging to the genus Patinopecten, were analysed by paper chromatography to obtain amino acids. Each paper chromatographic pattern of the fossil specimens is much allied to that of the recent one except for diminition of the total amino acid content of the formers. In conclusion, the writer suggested the future right way to paleobiochemical research, based upon the reasoning of the decomposition process of conchiolin proteins.
