Description

The precipitation stripping from organic solution of tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) loaded with samarium into NaOH aqueous solution at room temperature was investigated in order to enlarge the use of solvent extraction.<BR>The precipitation rate with NaOH solution was considerably fast and the precipitation fraction more than 99% was attained within 60 sec. These precipitates identified as Sm (OH)3 from an x-ray diffraction analysis. When a lower NaOH solution was used, the precipitates could not be found although samarium was completely stripped. This result was attributable to the depletion of the OH- ions which reacted with nitric acid simultaneously extracted with samarium by TBP. An aqueous NaOH solution whose concentration is higher than that of nitric acid extracted by TBP in the extraction stage is thus necessary for the precipitation stripping.
