Abstract

A patient with so-called carcinosarcoma of the larynx was encountered by the authors.
The patient was a 75 year old male with complaints of hoarseness over a two month period. The primary lesion was located on the right vocal cord as a polypoid mass. He had smoked tobacco and drunk liquor for 55 years.
The tumor microscopically manifested sarcoma-like areas with squamous cell carcinoma. After various staining procedures, the origin and relationship of two types of tissue revealed no evidence to support the concept of a malignant sarcomatous component.
The histological findings were interpreted as a variant of squamous cell carcinoma with marked anaplasia, some of which was an apparent spindle cell carcinoma.
