Description

A case of leiomyosarcoma which developed in the maxillary region is reported. It was revealed light-microscopically that the tumour cells were spindle-like shaped and gathered together with the long axis parallel to one another to form a corded arrangement. HPS staining gave an overall red tone, PTAH stained the tumour cells dark blue, in which tissue cross-stained could not be observed, and PAS staining presented the deficiency in glycogen. Electron-microscopically, the presence of pinocytotic vesicles, myofilaments and dense bodies, which characterized smooth muscle, were demonstrated.<br>Radiotherapy brought about the degeneration of the tumour, which was controlled by subsequent immunological therapy using Nocardia-CWS innoculation. A recurrence took place one year later and a maxillectomy was performed. After an additional year, the patient died of general weakness due to distant metastases in the peritonium.
