The perilymphatic oxygen tension was studied in 67 cats with the polarographic method, in response to sympathomimetic drugs. Noradrenaline, Adrenaline and Methoxamine induced increases in the perilymphatic oxygen tension. With these drugs, the ratios of the perilymphatic oxygen tension to blood pressure were greater than that of Angiotensin possibly because of the permeability change due to the stimulants. An α blocker drug, such as Ergotamine, produced no remarkable change in the perilymphatic oxygen tension. However, Regitine®, Tolazoline® and POB produced progressive decreases in the perilymphatic oxygen tension, mainly the decrease in blood flow, with a weak blockade of α receptor. Also, POB inhibited the increase in the perilymphatic oxygen tension in response to Noradrenaline, but had no effect on the response to Angiotensin. Alupent, Isoproterenol and β blocker, Inderal® produced no remarkable changes in the perilymphatic oxygen tension. The oxygen permeability of the cochlear vessel wall is weakly influenced by α receptors.
