A survey was conducted on 1, 000 laryngectomized patients who were selected at random from thirteen clubs in Japan. Seven hundred and ninety-five responses became available for statistical analyses. In this paper, socio-economic aspects are discussed chiefly in relation to pre- and post-operative vocal use in occupational and/or social life. The results are summarized as follows: (1) After laryngectomy, many persons used their voice less frequently than before the surgery. (2) 14.2 percent of the entire number of subjects failed to learn substitutional phonation, such as that with esophageal vibration or with an artificial larynx. (3) The rate of success in learning substitutional phonation was higher in persons who had used their voice frequently before the surgery than in those of infrequent vocal use. (4) Approximately 90 percent of the subjects more or less had inconveniences and/or problems in their occupational and/or social life. (5) Such tended to be considerable for those who had used their voice frequently and failed to learn to how to speak again. (6) 37.1 percent of the subjects changed or lost their job and income decreased for 43.7 percent of the subjects. (7) Decrease in income and/or failure to stay in the preoperative job frequently occurred in those who failed to learn to speak, and those who had used their voice extensively.
