Abstract

Pressure sensitive adhesives were composed using an emulsion of an acrylic base polymer and an emulsified rosin-based tackifier by varying their charge ratio. They were adhered on poly (ethylene) and stainless steel and stored at different temperature.Peel strength between the PSA and the adherends increased with increasing the amount of tackifier charged. This tendency was significant especially when stainless steel was used. Meanwhile, in the storage experiment, the longer the PSA assemblies were stored at high temperature, the more the peel strength on stainless steel increased, when tackifier charge ratio was kept constant. In order to investigate the relevancy between these results the tackifier concentration of the bulk and the surface region of the PSA were measured by transmission and ATR methods of FT-IR spectroscopy, respectively. The linear relation was observed between the tackifier concentration and the absorbance ratio of 1260cm-1 due to C-O-C groups of the base polymer and 1241cm-1 due to those of the tackifier in both spectroscopies. ATR method revealed that the concentration of the tackifier near surface region is much higher than that of bulk in the PSA, indicating that the migration of the tackifier toward the surface of PSA took place during storage in order to minimize the interfacial surface free energy between the PSA and the adherend. This might partly explain the experimental results that the peel strength between the PSA and the stainless steel increased when the PSA assemblies were stored at high temperature.
