Abstract

This study dealt with tuber formation in sea club rush in the paddy fields. The results obtained were as follows;
1) The process of tuber formation in sea club rush differed from that in other perennial paddy weeds. At the first stage of tuber formation, swelling at the base of the aerial shoots and tuber formation at the tip of the rhizomes were observed. Tubers formed earlier became shoot tubers, which those fromed later did not sprout and became chain tubers directly. The swelling part of the aerial shoots and shoot tubers became basal-tubers when the top of the aerial shoots died.
2) Sixty to seventy percent of basal-tubers were formed in the 0-5cm soil layer and the rest was formed in the 5-10cm soil layer of paddy fields. No basal tubers were found in the soil layer at a depth of 10cm and below. Chain tubers were formed mostly in the 5-10cm soil layer and were not found below the plow sole in paddy fields.
