Both on consolidated and on traditional levee slopes, Imperata cylindrica var. koenigii type grasslands (Imperata cylindrica var. koenigii communities) are widely distributed. In order to analyze the differences in the floristic composition of these grasslands on consolidated and traditional levee slopes, we carried out phytosociological studies in Sanda, Hyogo Pref. The results showed that the grasslands were divided into two communities: Imperata cylindrica-Adenophora triphylla var. japonica community and Erigeronto-Imperatetum cylindricae described recently as a new type of association under weeding conditions. Other factors which be able to differentiate the former community from the latter association were life-form spectrum, phytosociological spectrum, ratio of naturalized plants, number of occurring species and number of character species of Miscanthetea sinensis. The Erigeronto -Imperatetum cylindricae is characterized by the presence of many naturalized plants such as Solidago altissima and a distribution on consolidated levee slopes. On the other hand, the Imperata cylindrica-Adenophora triphylla var. japonica community is a traditional community characterized by the presence of many native plants such as Sanguisorba officinalis and a distribution on traditional levee slopes. It appears that this community plays an important role in species richness and traditional landscape because it includes many native plants.
