Description

The vertical distribution of four species of large brown algae along the coast of Iwanai, Hokkaido, were investigated in relation to the substratum, water temperature and wave strength between 1998 and 2000. The perennial algae Sargassum confusum C. Agardh and Cystoseira hakodatensis (Yendo) Fensholt were abundantly distributed in areas of stable substratum with drifted sand. The annual algae Laminaria religiosa Miyabe in Okamura and Undaria pinnatifida (Harvey) Suringar were abundantly distributed in areas of stable and unstable substrata, but were sparsely distributed in areas with drifted sand. The standing crop of Laminaria religiosa and Cystoseira hakodatensis, both cold water species, was increased under cold hydrographic conditions with high wave action, but that of Undaria pinnatifida and Sargassum confusum, both warm water species, was increased under warm and calm conditions.
