The species composition and the distribution pattern of grassland vegetation were studied in the Tanzawa, Hakone and Fuji area, which belongs to the Fossa Magna region. The grasslands were classified into three types, A, B, and C, on the basis of their species composition. Type A grasslands were found in mountain areas, type B in foothills, and type C in lowlands. Those types are independently distributed along the altitudinal gradient in this area. The life form spectra and the number of species differed among these types. Type C had a higher percentage of therophytes and a lower percentage of hemicryptophytes than the other two types. The number of species in types A and B declined in direct proportion to the increase in altitude, while that in type C declined abruptly with a decrease in altitude. The distribution patterns of the three grasslands were affected by changes in flood or human disturbance along an altitude gradient.
