Seasonal changes in leaf and frass litter and in leaf numbers on the shoots of the alder Alnus inokumae were investigated in an artificial alder stand in an outbreak year of the winter moth Operophtera brumata population and in an ordinary year. The winter moth larvae which appeared in the middle of May preferred the newly emerged or embryonic leaves to the older ones. In the outbreak year, the leaf biomass decreased temporarily in June owing to the larval feeding and increased again from July to August by the new shoot elongation. The food consumption of a moth population was estimated at most 30 g/m^2 in the outbreak year. The difference between leaf biomass without larval consumption and that after the larval feeding, or the potential production attained 150 g/m^2.
