Abstract

In concurrence with the popularization of the basement insulation method, damagecaused to wooden structural materials, such as foundations and pillars, by termites thatcrawl up inside the basement insulation from the soil has become a problem. As a measureto repel termites at the joints of insulation as well as around the pipes that penetrate thefoundation, we propose anti-termite insulation manufactured by adding a termite repellentto the raw material for the extruded polystyrene foam insulation board, and an adhesivecontaining termite repellent. To confirm that these anti-termite materials perform their anti-termite performanceover a long period, we installed anti-termite materials in a test building whose conditionswere close to actual conditions and confirmed the long-term performance of the anti-termitematerials. This article reports the results of a 10-year observation of the test building with whichinsulation outside the foundation is assumed with outdoor installation of Styrofoam AT, ananti-termite insulation certified by the Japan Wood Protection Association. We confirmedthat the anti-termite performance were effective even 10 years after installation, throughmeasurement of the quantity of residual termite repellent and performing indoor termiterepellency test on the anti-termite insulation Styrofoam AT, which was collected from thetest building 5 and 10 years after installation.
