The effects of sample shapes and treatment methods on absorption of preservatives in culms of bamboo (Phyllostachys bambusoides Sieb. et Zucc.) were examined.
Three different types of bamboo sample were used for the experiment; real size sample (ca. 4cm diameter, 180cm length), round sample (3cm diameter, 40cm length), and cut sample (ca. 4cm width, 0.5-0.8cm thickness, 40cm length).
All samples were obtained in Oita, Japan. The effects of boiling with 0.02% NaOH solution prior to preservatives treatment were also examined for each sample. In treatment of the real size sample with 0.8% Tanalith CuAz aqueous solution in a cylinder tank by Bethell process, treatment pressure more than 1.3MPa for the non-boiled sample and 0.7 MPa for the boiled sample caused the formation of split cracks on the culm. Preservatives permeated within vessels and sievetubes close to inner endodermis. The absorption of preservative under treatment at 0.49 MPa was 120kg/m3 for the non-boiled sample and 240 kg/m3 for the boiled sample, respectively. On the other hand, in the case of the round and cut samples, impregnation treatment was carried out in a small tube. In this method, comparison of treatment effect between OPM and Bethell processes was possible. Impregnation of preservatives by the latter method was better than the former one. Moreover, the absorption amount of preservatives was highly correlated to the time-length of treatment.
