Description

Materials of 29 patients with bullous pemphigoid were reviewed. Twelve patients were male and seventeen were female. The age at onset of the disease was 66.4 years on the average, ranging from 37 to 87 years. The mucous membrane was involved in 14 of 29 patients (48.3 %). Histologically, 24 specimens for 18 patients showed marked inflammatory infiltrations in the upper dermis, while in 3 specimens from 3 patients only slight infiltrations were seen. In 11 of 29 patients the diagnosis was supported by immunofluorescent examinations Anti-basement membrane antibodies were found in the serum of all 11 patients examined by IF methods. But titres of the antibody did not always correlate with activities of the disease. In follow-up study, 7 patients were completely clear, 4 occasionally had minute lesions after treatment, 3 were under steroid therapy yet, and 11 died. Three of the 11 deaths were related to steroid therapy, while the others were due to different diseases.
