Incidence of Dermatophytes in the Dermatological Clinic of Gifu University School of Medicine from 1979 to 1984

Description

The incidence and distribution of dermatophytosis in the Dermatological Clinic of Gifu University Hospital from 1979 to 1984 were studied. A total of 1,836 patients with dermatophytosis were studied. The incidence of subjects to all outpatients was 9.9%. There were 17 with tinea capitis, 183 with tinea corporis, 251 with tinea cruris, 967 with tinea pedis, 141 with tinea manus, 270 with tinea unguium, 2 with sycosis parasitaria and 6 with kerion celsi. The majority of the isolated dermatophytes was 787 strains of T. rubrum (77.5%). In addition, 193 strains of T. mentagrophytes (19.0%), 12 of E. floccosum (1.2%), 11 of M. cains (1.1%), 6 of T. violaceum (0.6%), 4 strains of M. gypseum (0.4%), a strain of T. verrucosum (0.1%) and a strain of unidentified dermatophyte were also isolated. The incidences of T. rubrum and T. mentagrophytes were 68.4% and 30.8% in tinea pedis, 87.4% and 9.7% in tinea unguium, 92.3% and 3.6% in tinea cruris, respectively. The ratio of T. rubrum to T. mentagrophytes was 4.1:1.
