Description

We report a case with malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) in a 68-year-old man which occurred on the right side of his lower back. The tumor was composed of an admixture of interlacing fascicles of fibroblast-like spindle cells, histiocytic cells and bizarre giant cells showing abnormal mitotic activity. The diagnosis was made based on light and electron microscopic findings as storiform-pleomorphic type of MFH, although focal myxoid change was also observed in the tumor. A part of the tumor cells expressed positive immunoreactivity for PG-M 1, a monoclonal antibody detecting monocyte/macrophage associated antigen. In addition, immunoreactivity was also found in a few cells for HHF-35, a monoclonal antibody detecting a myofibroblast-like nature of the cells as well as muscle actins. KP-1, a panhistiocytic marker detected by monoclonal antibody, α 1-antitripsin and α 1-antichymotrypsin was not able to identify immunoreactivity within the tumor.
