Abstract

Clindamycin phosphate lotion (Dalacin ® T lotion) was applied directly with a fingertip to one side of the face and with a cotton pledget to another side of the face in 23 adult Japanese patients with acne vulgaris. We assessed the clinical efficacy and patients' satisfaction with a cotton pledget application compared with an ordinary fingertip application to inflammatory acne lesions. The severity of acne and the number of inflammatory lesions were measured by comparing the two sides of the face at 0, 4, and 8 weeks. We observed that the application by a cotton pledget did not impair the efficacy of the topical treatment for acne throughout the study. The usability and patients' satisfaction with or preference for one or the other of the two topical application methods were also assessed by the subjects at the end of the study. The patients concluded that there were no significant differences between these two types of application, including the easiness and irritation of application. Importantly, a significantly large number of the subjects (> 70%) were pleased to have a more practical explanation directly from dermatologists on how to apply the prescribed topical medicine. These results suggest that dermatologists should give patients information on more proper application methods in the topical treatment of acne, and that the use of a cotton pledget containing clindamycin phosphate lotion may improve adherence to therapy, especially for adult female acne patients, who are familiar with using cosmetic cotton pledgets in their daily life.
