Abstract

A 5-year-old Japanese girl presented with a gray-white, blunt, keratinous lesion, 1 mm wide and 1 mm long, on the tip of the right little finger. The projection had been present since birth, and had been growing parallel to the nail and on the palmar aspect of the right little finger. A plane roentgenogram of the right little finger showed no abnormal shadows, and the bone structures were normal. The projection including its portion on the distal phalanx was removed by wedge resection under general anesthesia at her family and her own requests. Histolopathological examination revealed a keratinous matrix stained with eosin, which was lined by thickened stratified squamous epithelium, an image closely similar in structure to that of a normal nail. The diagnosis of congenital ectopic nail was made on the bases of the above clinical and histopathological findings.
