Abstract
The rupture process in a three dimensional fault with nonuniform fracture strength is investigated on the basis of Otsuka's mechanical model together with the Irwin's fracture criterion. It is proved here that the stress singularity arising in the Otsuka's model is equivalent to that in three dimensional elastic crack, and that our results from numerical simulations by using finite stress rupture criterion correspond to those by using Irwin's criterion. In the case when high fracture strength are distributed on the fault, the decrease of the rupture speed in the direction perpendicular to the pre-stress becomes remarkable as compared with that in the direction along the pre-stress. When irregularities of the strength are large, the rupture pattern and the source time function become quite complicated, but unruptured regions do not exist over the entire fault within the range we investigated.
