To investigate the effect of the Rokko fault zone on seismic wave attenuation, we estimated temporal coda attenuation and apparent body wave attenuation in the crust beneath Kobe area, Japan. We analyzed 153 aftershock seismograms of the 1995 Hyogo-ken Nanbu Earthquake (Jan. 17, MJMA=7.2) for the frequency ranges 1.5≤f≤24Hz. The Qc-1 depends strongly on frequency: Qc-1=0.057f-1.13 at lapse time 20s. The Qp-1 and Qs-1 are expressed as Qp-1=0.057f-0.96 and Qs-1=0.017f-0.72, respectively. Qc-1 values estimated in the aftershock area are nearly the same as those estimated in the Kinki district. On the other hand, Qs-1 values are larger than those of the Kinki area and other regions.<BR>These results suggest that the Rokko fault zone attenuates the amplitude of direct S waves more strongly than average crust does, but the fault zone does not affect coda Q.
