Abstract

Storing grains for a long period calls for adequate measure against the troubles—segregation, caking, crushing, heat generation, bridging or deterioration—one is principally concerned with segregation at the time of charge of the grains in the silos and their caking during storage.
This was what led to our invstigations on the actual nature of segregation and caking in the silos storing imported soybeans.
At the same time, we intended also to study the physical characteristics of the whole and divided soybeans, dust, foreign matter and soybean skin. Our results show that (i) dust must be prevented because of its high humidity absorption, adhesion and heat generating tendencies, and that (ii) divided soybeans resist flow and tend to form lumps together with dust.
On the basis of these results, we considered ways and means of preventing segregation and have suggested use of bulk material charging device to avoid segregation when filling the silos with soybeans.
