Abstract

We reviewed the microcosm studies focusing soil ecological processes. Starting from simple flask system, pots with litter and soil compartment and field microcosms have been used frequently, whereas the field enclosure method and the Ecotron are the most complex systems. The Earthtron facility is simple but effectively mimics the soil temperature and moisture change. These techniques are promising for the study of biodiversity-function and below- and aboveground linkages in terrestrial ecosystems.
