An azimuthal anchoring direction of many different types of nematic liquid crystals has been investigated on a rubbed poly(vinyl cinnamate), PVCi, film. It was found that liquid crystals with and without polar groups aligned perpendicular and parallel to a rubbing direction on a rubbed PVCi surface, respectively. The anchoring direction was also investigated by using mixture liquid crystals with and without polar groups. The mixing ratio of which the alignment direction on rubbed PVCi changed from parallel to perpendicular to the rubbing direction was different from that on a rubbed and crosslinked PVCi surface. By using this alignment phenomenon, the alignment patterning was successfully demonstrated by exposing the rubbed PVCi surface with unpolarized UV light.
