Description

The farmers cultivating grapes in green-houses in okayama Prefecture have con-fronted the enlargement of management area in the recent very rapid economic growth of the nation. However, the farmers' attitudes have shown some fundamental areal diferentiations. The areas with the combined cultivation of grapes and paddy have not changed the scale of management by transforming themselves into parttime farmers, whereas the areas growing both grapes and peaches have been enlarging the scale. So, the grape horticulture in okayama Prefecture has seen a remarkable development in the fruit growing areas supported by the increasing use of green-houses heated by steam boiler. As a result, the shipment period of higher quality grapes has been ex-tended.
Through this research, the author would like to stress the following: We can admit that the regional differences in the management of viticulture has occurred in the same physical as well as labor market environments. The differentiation is primarily due to the difference in the combination of crops grown and the difference in the farmers'attitudes to the national policy of agriculture in the rapid economic growth. We can also admit that the areal differentiation and the size differentiation have been rapid-ly proceeding even in this very intensive viticulture region. It is important to note that the size enlargement of horticulture is proceeding, not shrinking as exemplified by many cases around the metropolises of Japan, in spite of their location which is much faected by the urbanization of Rkayama City and is near a large manufacturing dis-trict.
This paper is a part of the author's successive research on the regional formation and regional differentiation of horticulture.
