Description

The efficacy of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polypropylene (PP) film in combination with an aqueous extract of Bidens pilosa var. radiata on suppressing the activity of second-stage juveniles of Meloidogyne incognita was investigated. In in vitro tests, PVA strips (1 mm2) treated with a stock solution of the plant extract showed high nematicidal activity. The control effect of PVA and PP film belts and bags, which are water soluble and insoluble, respectively, was evaluated using pot tests. While root-knot formation was suppressed when using PVA film belts and bags, no prevention of root-knotting was observed when using the PP film belts. The bags significantly reduced root-knot formation to a level that was equivalent to fosthiazate treatment. Compared to the extract-free PVA treatments, root-knot formation was suppressed when PVA bags contained 1.5 times plant extract. Thus, the control effect of the chemical and physical composition of PVA films treated with the plant extract was confirmed.
