Description

Colonial Mozambique and Angola played an important economic role in offsetting the Portuguese trade deficit accumulated for decades through the production of primary products such as cotton, oilseed, and minerals for the Portuguese industry as well as the world market, and through the acquisition of foreign currency through labor supply to colonies, including non-Portuguese territories. This paper focuses on the fact that a large amount of “contract labor” was sent to São Tomé and Príncipe from Mozambique and Angola under this colonial economic structure, especially from areas that were heavily involved in the First World War. The locals began challenging the Portuguese authorities more frequently during the war than they had before. This was in tandem with their appreciation of the political and military instability of the Portuguese regime. The actions taken against these movements were recorded as military operations to subdue resistance in archival documents. The purpose of the study was to examine the increasing amount of "contract labor" that was sent from Mozambique and Angola in the context of the political and social impact that the First World War had on the colonial situation and local societies.
