Description

The fine structure of the dorsal bodies was examined in the giant African snail, Achatina fulica to clarify their secretion and regulation by the cerebral ganglia on reproduction. In the cells of dorsal bodies, many large, ellipsoidal, lipid droplets with a thick electrondense cortex were found. It appeared that these droplets were formed within encircling granular endoplasmic reticulum. Furthermore, secretory granules with an electron-dense core that were synthesized by the Golgi apparatus and well developed mitochondria with cristae were also found. The cells of dorsal bodies in the breeding season were more active synthetically than those in the non-breeding season. Furthermore, neurosecretory cells that synthesized spherical granules were active during the breeding season suggesting an involvement of those cells in the hormonal stimulation of reproductive processes.
