The occurrences of spined individuals and the type, number and length of the spines of Batillus cornutus in Kushima, Aburatsu, Hososhima, Urashiro, Kamae, Saganoseki and Kunisaki along the east coast of Kyushu were examined. The results obtained by the present survey are as follows : 1. The occurrence rates of spined Batillus cornutus was 100% in both Kushima and Aburatsu, 31.0% in Hososhima, 17.8% in Urashiro, 5.4% in Kamae while 0% in Saganoseki and Kunisaki, respectively, showing a decreasing tendency northward from Hyuga-Nada (the Sea of Hyuga) to Bungo Suido (the Bungo Strait) and to the Seto Inland Sea. 2. The occurrence rate of spined type A (spines in a single row) was 0% in Kushima, 7.9% in Aburatsu, and 54.9% in Hososhima, respectively, exhibiting an increasing tendency northward. On the other hand, the rate of the type B (spines in two rows) was 64.2% in Kushima, 36.8% in Aburatsu, and 16.1% in Hososhima, respectively, showing a decreasing tendency northward. 3. The number of spines of Batillus cornutus was 19.5 in Kushima, 20.4 in Aburatsu, 11.5 in Hososhima, and 10.3 in Urashiro, respectively, showing a tendency that individuals living in the southern part of the Sea of Hyuga have significantly larger number of spines than those in the northern part of this Sea. 4. The spinal length of Batillus cornutus was 8.31 mm in Kushima, 5.76 mm in Aburatsu, 4.94 mm in Hososhima, and 3.93 mm in Urashiro, respectively, exhibiting a decreasing tendency northward along the Sea of Hyuga.
